Understanding Your BMI Results
Body Mass Index (BMI) is an international screening tool used by the World Health Organization (WHO) to categorize the nutritional status of adults. It is a mathematical correlation between height and weight used to identify potential health risks associated with body fat.
How BMI is calculated?
Our tool uses the standard metric and imperial formulas to find the ratio of your weight to your height squared:
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
Understanding the Categories
- Underweight (< 18.5): May indicate nutritional deficiencies or underlying health issues.
- Normal weight (18.5 – 24.9): Associated with the lowest risk for chronic diseases.
- Overweight (25.0 – 29.9): Indicates a predisposition to metabolic and cardiovascular issues.
- Obesity (≥ 30.0): Divided into Classes I, II, and III, it requires medical attention due to high risks of complications.
Medical Disclaimer (YMYL): This BMI calculator is provided for informational and educational purposes only. BMI is a screening tool and is not a medical diagnosis. It does not distinguish between muscle mass and body fat. Always consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian for a comprehensive clinical assessment (e.g., skinfold thickness, bioimpedance, or blood tests).
Limitations of BMI
While useful for the general population, BMI has significant limitations:
- Athletes: Individuals with high muscle mass may have an "overweight" BMI despite having a low body fat percentage.
- Elderly: Muscle and bone loss in older age can mask the actual nutritional status.
- Pregnancy: BMI is not an applicable measure during pregnancy.
