How does an IP Address work?

An IP Address (Internet Protocol) is your unique identifier on the network. It works like a mailing address for your computer or mobile device, allowing data to be sent and received at the correct destination.

What this tool reveals:

  • IPv4/IPv6 IP: Your current identification number on the internet.
  • Geolocation: The city and country where your connection is registered.
  • Internet Service Provider (ISP): The company that provides your network access.
  • ASN: The Autonomous System Number of your network, used in global routing.

Public vs. Private IP

The IP you see here is your Public IP, assigned by your provider. Inside your home or company, your router assigns Private IPs (usually starting with 192.168.x.x) to each device, using a technology called NAT to connect them all to the internet through a single public IP.
